What is Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)?

Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP is the integrated management of a business’s main processes, operating in real-time, and enabled by software and technology. ERP software acts as a single application for all departments (marketing, sales, human resources, etc.) to access each other’s systems, streamlining the transfer of information and communication.

ERP software is applicable and beneficial for all types of businesses in every industry. This technology can be deployed in three versions, on-premise, cloud, or hybrid, depending on the set-up or preferences of the business.

Main Advantage of ERP Software

One of the main advantages of an ERP system is that it saves a business precious time and money. ERP’s ability to implement resource planning and purchasing can eliminate costly duplicates, regarding transactional data, and incompatible technology (Investopedia). It also connects the different technologies used by the various departments of a business.

ERP Software is Like a Train with Many Cabins

To picture ERP software in action, imagine that the different departments of a business are travelers. ERP creates a scenario where these travelers are not on a crowded subway or in a fleet of private jets, but rather a single, spacious train. A train where its passengers (or departments) have private cabins, yet they are still connected if they needed to pass something along to another cabin.

ERP Systems Create Standardization

ERP systems create standardization across a business. They are designed around a single, defined data structure that normally has a common database (Oracle). This way, a company doesn’t run into confusion during hand-offs of information. Similarly, all data and resource attributes are recorded the same way in all spreadsheets.
