There is presently a critical need for cybersecurity. With whole workforces required to work remotely, threat actors have deployed phishing schemes and watering hole attacks with amplified intensity.

Last time, we covered five recommendations that can help secure your remote workforce. While a majority of our previous suggestions were for employees, this new list of five applies more for the owners and operators of a business and its network.

#6: Give Users the Ability to Change/Update Passwords

Although you and your employees don’t have admin for your username and password, your passwords can eventually be cracked if not routinely updated. Grant your users the ability to change and update their passwords at least every 90 days.

#7: Two-Step Verification

Set up a system where once your users log in, they then must type in a security code that is sent to their phones. This extra step ensures that only your employees with both the required password and their personal phones can access your network.

#8: Protect Important Information in Emails

When you or your employees send out emails with important documents or files, make sure you establish restrictions. Put the right technology in place that will prevent unauthorized people from downloading or forwarding important information.

#9: Consider Deploying Unified Threat Management

UTM is where a single hardware or software installation provides multiple security functions at a single point on a network. Consider using a UTM appliance or tool because a single IT employee will not be able to stay up for hours on end, looking for every malicious threat. Especially, now when threat actors are attacking more frequently.

#10: Utilize Firewall Logs

You must be diligent when examining data that is collected by your firewall logs. Investigate and respond to possible or existing threats. Also, make sure your firewall logs are turned on as sometimes they can be turned off to conserve bandwidth.
