In past posts, we have covered many of the security issues associated with having a remote workforce. While these concerns are extremely important, not all things are doom and gloom when it comes to your remote employees. Studies reveal that remote work is more beneficial for a business and the employees themselves than having conventional office workers.

The Benefits Remote Workers Give Businesses

Many businesses have been apprehensive of remote workers because of the distractions of the home environment. Supervision also seems impossible if your workers are miles away. Although these are legitimate concerns, the research shows that the opposite is true.

According to a survey and study by GitLab, they found that businesses with remote workers saw a 52% increase in productivity and a 48% efficiency increase. They also discovered a 44% increase in employee morale and a 43% increase in employee loyalty/ retention.

A study done by Airtasker supports the benefits of remote workers further. They found that on average, remote employees worked 16.8 days more, every year than their office worker counterparts. Furthermore, remote employees are more focused, losing only 27 minutes to distractions compared to office workers losing 37 minutes to distractions each workday.

While not every worker is cut out or fully acclimated yet to remote work, there are plenty of methods to assist with productivity and the prevention of isolation.

The Benefits Remote Work Gives to Employees

The allure of remote work can give you a leg up over other businesses when searching for employees. GitLab found that 62% of workers would consider leaving their collocated company for a remote role.

Similarly, Airtasker found that commuting has led to 1 in 4 employees leaving a job. With the average commute for Americans coming out to 30 minutes, it is no surprise why so many people are opting for remote roles.

Keeping with the subject of commuting, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and Airtrasker’s study, remote employees saved over $4,500 per year on fuel compared to office workers. Due to the combined decrease in hours commuting, remote workers accumulated 408 hours or 17 days’ worth of free time compared to office workers who must commute.

Remote employees also spend 25 more minutes exercising during the workweek than those who work in an office, undoubtedly due to their extra free time.

Enabling a Remote Workforce

The recent restrictions caused by COVID-19 have forced many businesses to fully or partly transition to a remote workforce. While the research shows that remote work is beneficial for both businesses and employees, enabling a remote workforce is a whole challenge in its own right.
