Misconception of Cyber Security
Most people have an idea of what a cyber-attack or a hacker is. This image has been formed from various sources such as entertainment and media. However, surface-level knowledge and cultural perceptions are not enough to fully understand the width and breadth of this subject.
To dispel some falsehoods and to shed some light on the subject, you should be aware of three common misconceptions concerning cybersecurity. They are as follows: size doesn’t matter, all one needs to be protected is cybersecurity insurance, and there is such a thing as a ‘silver bullet.’
misconception #1:
Size doesn’t matter. I’m not a large organization/company, what do I have that someone would want to steal? I don’t have customer data, nor do I take credit cards, so I am an unlikely target. Untrue. Attackers have no qualms attacking smaller organizations. In fact, they are often targeted more. Larger organizations are actually in a way, better off because they may have access to better tools and often have dedicated staff to handle the workload.
misconception #2:
Cybersecurity insurance is all I need to be protected. False. The average dwell time is 99 to 283 days (or the time a new, unknown threat can remain undetected in your environment). A cybersecurity event often isn’t just a matter of simply alerting your cybersecurity insurance provider after the threat has been identified. Insurance can’t fix your reputation, redeem lost trust, or repair a PR nightmare. These things can’t be measured fully in monetary terms.
misconception #3:
There is such a thing as a ‘silver bullet.’ Incorrect. The war against cybercriminals is an unconventional war. There is no technology that acts as a ‘trump card’ and renders all threats ineffective. To win in the war on cyber threats you must remain vigilant and you must understand how the enemy engages. Early detection, full visibility, and effective prevention are key. Being able to identify a threat quickly along with its impact enables you to strategically stop the threat from spreading and taking your company down.
