The Reality of Cybersecurity
The Reality of Cybersecurity
If you read the last post pertaining to misconceptions of cybersecurity, you were most likely put off by the seemingly unwinnable battle between you and cyber threats. It would appear that if you have no defense you will be attacked and even if you have a defense it will break at some point. All is not lost however, for a deeper understanding of cyber security’s function reveals how to use it effectively.
“Everyone is going to get sick, but what you need to do is be preventative.”
Cybersecurity as an Illness
Think of cybersecurity as getting sick. Everyone is going to get sick, but what you need to do is be preventative. You can wash your hands, eat well, and get plenty of sleep. But healthy people still get sick for there is no way you can eliminate all risks. Just be ready to determine when you are sick, so you can treat it straight away, “nip it in the bud” if you will.
Quick Detection and Rapid Containment
Cybercriminals have the upper hand and not every attack will be stopped. But you need the protection to be able to detect the attack within minutes rather than months. Detect it quickly and contain it rapidly. You also need to be able to detect the changes in your environment. Cybersecurity is always going to be reactive, so one must be vigilant to watch for possible gaps in the defense.
Identify Gaps in Your Defenses
Identifying gaps in your security solutions is the key to an effective cybersecurity set-up. Understand the tools your security configuration offers and what they are capable of doing. Are your cybersecurity defenses commoditized? Are you relying on a third party? Can you see all environments at all of your locations at the same time? Knowing where the gaps allow you to more effectively rush to the scene and stanch the bleeding.
Knowledge, visibility, and awareness are the best tools to activating cyber security’s potential. Like any illness, some are unavoidable but the end goal is to get better fast, not to stay sick forever. Please contact us today for further information and insight concerning cybersecurity.
